DARE Installation
We dare you to challenge what you think you know about disability.
That's why our DARE interactive display is filled with possibility. Each item—like communication devices, therapy tools and creative aids—tells a story about what's possible when we dare to show up for kids with disabilities everywhere.
Dare to make a difference
Post a photo with our DARE sign on social media using #TogetherWeDare and tag Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. CIBC will donate $5 to the hospital for every photo we’re tagged in on social media, up to a maximum of $25,000.
Brain-Computer Interface
Through the cutting-edge technology of brain computer interface, kids with limited speech and movement use the power of their brains to control devices like moving a power wheelchair, painting, or playing music. To help researchers interpret brain electrical signals, the child wears a cap with electroencephalography electrodes attached to it.
3D Printed Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO)
This AFO was created using a 3D scan of the client’s leg. The team customized the design, added components, and printed the device with a soft, cushioned insole. A 3D-printed replica of the leg shows how the brace fits. Developed with the Bloorview Research Institute, these advances are shaping the future of orthotics and prosthetics.
Pediatric Transfemoral (Above Knee) Prosthesis
This prosthesis has a lightweight frame, flexible liner, mechanical knee, and dynamic foot. Clients can choose colors and designs, making the device their own. It’s a fun way to be part of the process and show individuality.
Pediatric Transtibial (Below Knee) Prosthesis
Some children may have an amputation because of illness, infection, circulation problems, or an accident. This prosthesis is made for the water—perfect for swimming, splashing, or playing at the beach. Since kids grow and change quickly, they usually need a new one each year.
BootleBlast
Bootle Blast is a movement tracking video game that makes therapy exercises fun. Kids capture little robots in a virtual world called Sky Space City—and the game can be personalized to meet their abilities and therapy goals, all while improving motor functions.
Communication Board
The Communication and Writing Aids (CWAS) team helps children and youth express themselves. Using picture boards, letter boards, or devices like tablets, we find the tools that fit each child’s needs. But tools aren’t enough on their own. We coach families and partners to notice body movements, use boards in everyday talk, and advocate for AAC so every child can be understood.
FlexComp
For children who can’t communicate emotions on their own, the FlexComp opens up a world of connection. Attached to the child’s fingers, electrodermal activity sensors pick up on changes in their skin to understand their emotional state.
Shaping the future of pediatric care
As Canada’s hospital for kids with disabilities, Holland Bloorview’s developmental pediatrics subspecialty residency and fellowship program is filling urgent gaps in care. We’re training the next generation of developmental pediatricians to become outstanding clinicians, advocates, innovators and teachers in childhood disability.
Dare to change the future of pediatric disability care
At Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, we dare to do what’s never been done before. We’re raising $100 million to become the world’s most trusted leader in learning, collaboration and creation. Through our Centre for Excellence in Childhood Disability, we’re making sure kids with disabilities have access to the latest evidence-based care, programs, and technology—wherever they are, when they need it most.
